How to Make Your HDB Flat ‘Huat’: Toss Pineapple & Salt for Prosperity

11/10/2024

Congratulations! If you are reading this article, you are likely moving into your new home. Prior to moving into your new place, there is a popular belief that performing certain ritual or steps will ensure that your house will remain “huat!” and good luck and plenty of wealth will come your way. If you’re wondering to do it before your ID works and how to go about it and why it’s done, you’ve come to the right place.

What is the significance of Pineapple and Salt?

Rolling in Positive Energy

One popular or well believed tradition to make your HDB flat ‘huat’, which means to make it prosperous is by tossing pineapple and salt. The pineapple, known as “ong lai” in Hokkien, literally translates to “prosperity comes.” Tossing a pineapple inside your new flat symbolizes inviting prosperity and good luck into your home.

Similarly, salt has been traditionally used for purification and warding off negative energies. This is usually done when you first collect your keys and opening your door for the first time.

By popular belief, the advice is to not to start any ID or renovation works before you have performed this ritual. Well, whether to do it not is entirely up to you. For me personally, I would since it wouldn’t harm to accumulate more wealth, right?

A Cultural Staple

While these customs might sound quirky, they have deep roots in local cultures and are widely practiced in Singapore. Following these traditions can help you feel more connected to your community and give you the psychological boost of knowing you’re starting your new chapter on a positive note.

Preparing for the ‘Huat’ Ceremony

Cleansing the Space

Before you start, it’s essential to clean your new space thoroughly.  The reason why this is essential is because the flat may be vacant for a while and the air inside may be stale or retaining previous qi if this is a resale flat. Hence, my advice is to ensure that this step is done carefully and do not rush into inviting your ID to discuss and to perform any renovation or ID works.

The act of cleaning serves to physically and metaphorically remove any lingering negativity from the previous occupants, setting the stage for a fresh and positive start.

What do you need to do?

Before conducting your huat ceremony, make sure you prepare the following items:

A fresh, ripe pineapple, please do not bring a rotten or a green and raw one.

A handful of rice (optional, but often included in similar rituals).

A small bag of salt, any brand just a small quantity will do.

Incense sticks (optional, for those who wish to include an additional spiritual element).

The Huat Ceremony: Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Enter with a clear mind and positive intentions

Enter your flat with a clear mind and positive intentions. If you’re moving in with family or a partner, it’s great to have them join you in the ceremony to amplify the positive energy. Ren Qi is always good, the more the merrier.

Step 2: Place the Pineapple at the Entrance

Without stepping into the house, place the pineapple at the entrance of your flat, on the floor just inside the door. The entrance is significant because it’s considered the main conduit for energy entering your home. From the entrance roll your pineapple into the house and shout “huat” ah to encourage and welcome positive energy to enter.  Following that, you may enter and continue to roll the pineapple to every corner of the house and continue shouting “huat” ah as well as other well wishes you would like to add.

Step 3: Salt Tossing

Take a handful of salt and toss it over your shoulders, ensuring it spreads across different parts of the entrance area. This action is believed to ward off any evil spirits and cleanse the space.

Step 4: Adding Rice (Optional)

Rice is another common element used in similar rituals. Scatter some rice in the corners of each room. Rice symbolizes abundance and ensures you’ll never be short of resources.

Step 5: Light Incense (Optional)

If you’ve chosen to include incense, light a couple of incense sticks and walk through your flat, allowing the smoke to permeate every corner. This act is believed to invite blessings and further purify your space.

Tips for Enhancing Your Huat Ceremony

Personalize the Ritual

Feel free to add any other elements that might hold personal significance for you. This could include playing soft, uplifting music or including other symbols of prosperity and happiness.

Involve Family Members

Make it a family affair. If you’re moving in with relatives or a partner, having them participate can strengthen the positive energy and also make for a memorable family bonding activity.

“Inviting prosperity isn’t just about the rituals; it’s about filling your new home with positive intentions and joy.”

What to Do After the Ceremony

Settling In

Once you’ve completed the huat ceremony, it’s time to arrange for your ID or contractors if you are thinking of renovating the place or if are ready to move in, this will be the time to bring in your furniture and belongings. Keeping the interior space clutter-free will help maintain the positive energy you’ve invited in.

Maintenance Rituals

To keep the positive vibes going, consider regular cleaning and other small rituals like lighting incense or placing fresh flowers in your home.

Socializing Your Space

Invite friends and family over to share your new space. Hosting a small housewarming party can further elevate the joyous atmosphere and bring in even more positive energy to the interior space.

In Summary: Welcoming Prosperity

Conducting a huat ceremony by tossing pineapple and salt might seem like a small gesture, but it can have a meaningful impact on how you feel in your new home. Whether you’re deeply spiritual or just enjoy participating in cultural traditions, this ceremony is a wonderful way to mark the beginning of a new chapter in your HDB flat.
